Hopewell, Virginia consists of approximately 11 square miles at the confluence of the James and Appomattox Rivers.  Home to major industry with freight arriving by water, commercial trucking via the interstate highway system along our western boundary and served by two railroads providing commercial freight service to move commodities such as coal, metals, chemicals, and merchandise.  You can be sure goods and services are constantly moving throughout our City.

Roadways

We work with the Virginia Department of Transportation on various transportation improvements to balance heavy commercial traffic with our additional daily urban traffic volumes such as with CMAQ, which stands for Congestion Mitigation & Air Quality which are projects that relate directly to relieving traffic congestion by adjusting or adding travel lanes, and making signalization improvements and URBAN projects which are designed to fund maintenance, operation and construction improvements to Virginia's transportation system. Including Hopewell's approximate 130 centerline miles.

For information on road improvement projects contact the City Engineer at (804) 541-2319.

All street maintenance is performed by the Department of Public Works.  For information regarding Traffic Signals, Pot Holes, Railroad Crossings, Street Lights, Pavement, Curbing and Sidewalks repairs, please refer to their pages.

Railways

The City has 17 centerline miles of rail lines owned and operated by CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern Corporation railroads which include 22 signalized and non-signalized  grade crossings.

Waterways

Although no commercial ports are operated within Hopewell, the James River, adjacent to Hopewell has a 25-foot deep channel to the Port of Richmond (20 miles to north), with weekly shipments from the Ports of Hampton Roads (75 miles to east).  Two recreational marinas, one privately operated and the other one operated by the city are located along the Appomattox River.  Hopewell is also equipped to provide river fire and rescue.

Pedestrian

Recreational trails to include pedestrian, and bikeways are also an important part of our continual transportation investment.
