John E. Tunstall, Jr. is the Fire Chief for the City of Hopewell. He has served in the position since October 2000 and is responsible for management of all fire service related activities, all building inspections and code enforcement activities.
With thirty years of experience in fire services, Chief Tunstall began his career in the fire services with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services in Richmond, Virginia. He was promoted up through the ranks to Fire Division Chief. During his thirteen years as a Senior Chief Officer, he served as the officer in charge of Fire Prevention, Support Services, and Operation Division.
Chief Tunstall's education includes an Associate Degree in Fire Services from J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, Bachelor of Science Degree in Safety and Risk Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University and a graduate of the Executive Fire Officer Program at the National Fire Academy. Throughout his career he continued to pursue educational opportunities and has several certifications of completion for professional courses to include Chief Fire Officer Designation.
Chief Tunstall is very involved in civic and professional organizations. He is a board member of the Crater Disability Services Board. He is a board member with the State Fire Chief Association of Virginia. Southeastern Fire Chief Association and International Association of Fire Chiefs. He serves on the professional Development Committee with the International Association of Fire Chiefs.
