  • Install smoke detectors on every level of your home. Test the detectors according to manufacturer's directions and replace it's batteries at least once a year.

  • Develop an escape plan. Practice your escape plan at least twice a year. Every member of the household should know at least two exits from each room. Make sure that doors and windows needed for escape are unobstructed and easy to open, If an exit route involves an upper story window, make sure there is a safe way to reach the ground.

  • Provide smokers with large, non-tip ashtrays. Before going to bed after people have been smoking, check cushions and furniture for smoldering butts.

  • Never smoke in bed or while you are on medication that could make you drowsy or disoriented.

  • Place space heaters at least three (3) feet away from furniture, walls, curtains or anything that can burn. Always turn space heaters off when you go to bed or leave home.

  • Make sure your fireplace is safe by having it cleaned professionally at least once a year. Use only seasoned hardwood or fireplace logs in a fireplace. Always use a screen to prevent sparks or even a log from slipping out of the fireplace.

  • Keep all kitchen appliances in good condition and have any worn electrical cords or plugs replaced.

  • Never leave cooking unattended. Wear tight-fitting or rolled up sleeves when cooking to avoid catching your clothing on fire.

  • If a small fire starts in a pan while cooking, carefully slide a lid over the pan to smother the flames and turn off the burner. Leave the lid on until the pan cools.

  • If you store gasoline, keep it outside your home in a shed or detached garage. Keep only a small quantity in a laboratory approved safety can.

  • Use and store flammable liquids far away from appliances, heaters, pilot lights and other sources of heat or flames.
