Brenda S. Pelham is a native of the City of Hopewell. She graduated from Hopewell High School in 1972, and received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Virginia State University in May of 1977. That same year, she was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army. She served the Army honorably for 12 years, achieving the rank of Captain.
Upon leaving the Army, she attended the University of Oklahoma, and received her Masters of Arts Degree. She returned to Hopewell, the city she loves, in September 1989. In 1990, she began employment with the Hopewell Public School System (HCPS), serving as a Guidance Counselor at Carter G. Woodson Middle School. She remains employed with HCPS as one of the Division’s Attendance Officer.
Ms. Pelham wasted no time volunteering in her community. Since her return home, she has served in many capacities, including: President, John Randolph Foundation; President, Hopewell Boys and Girls Club Advisory Board; President, Hopewell Chapter, America’s Promise; President, Youth NAACP; Member, Hopewell Emergency Crew Advisory Board, Mentor, Big Brother’s and Big Sister’s Organization; Member, Hopewell Black Heritage Committee; Member, Neighborhood Watch Council; Community Organizer of The Annual Walk Against Crime; Founder and Co-Director of Ladies Smooth Precision Drill Team, and of course, member of City Council and former Mayor.
She is the proud mother of two children: Jacqueline married to Elvin Edmonds, III; and, James Pelham married to Starnell Puaauli. She has overwhelming pride as a grandmother of nine grandchildren: Shantell Puaauli, Karon Puaauli- Wallace, Imani Edmonds, Antonio Pelham, Alena Pelham, Elvin Edmonds, IV, James Pelham, Alexis Edmonds, and Erin Edmonds.
