CITY OF HOPEWELL OPENS INCLEMENT WEATHER SHELTER
HOPEWELL, VA.The City’s Inclement Weather Shelter has been relocated to 102 S.10th Avenue (at the intersection of City Point Road and 10th Ave). The Shelter serves adult men and women in need of temporary shelter assistance. Families and individuals under the age of 18 seeking emergency needs assistance should be referred to the Hopewell Department of Social Services at (804) 541-2330.
The shelter will open at 8:00 P.M. Friday , November 29, 2019 and will be open on a daily basis through mid-March during the hours of 8:00 P.M opening to 8:00 A.M. closing. Additionally, the Shelter may be opened during instances of extreme weather conditions throughout the course of the year.
For the past four consecutive seasons, the Shelter has been staffed and operated exclusively utilizing community volunteers, with the City providing the funding to help offset operating costs. Community volunteers have been the backbone of the City’s Shelter program; however, the years of service have significantly drained the volunteer pool needed for overnight shelter coverage
This season (2019-20), the City has appropriated funding to contract with a private vendor, Commonwealth Catholic Charities (CCC) to staff and operate the Shelter. CCC also operates the cold weather shelter program for the City of Richmond. However, volunteers will be welcomed.
CCC is currently soliciting for cash and material donations, such as bedding, hygiene products, cleaning supplies to help in the operation of the shelter. Also, volunteers are being sought to serve as assistant shelter monitors. For inquiries please contact the Department of Social Services at (804) 541-2330 or via email at email@example.com for additional information regarding how the public can support and participate in this service.
