HOPEWELL PREPARES FOR LIGHT UP THE NIGHT CELEBRATION
ANNUAL EVENT COMBINES CHRISTMAS PARADE, GRAND ILLUMINATION, AND DOWNTOWN FESTIVAL TO WELCOME THE HOLIDAY SEASON
HOPEWELL, VA. The City of Hopewell will usher in the holiday season with its annual Light Up the Night celebration, a combination of the Hopewell Christmas Parade, grand illumination of Ashford Civic Plaza, and downtown festival featuring a variety of free and family-friendly activities. The event is scheduled for Sunday, December 8, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
The Hopewell Christmas Parade will begin at 4:00 p.m. and will travel from Cavalier Square Shopping Center to the Ashford Civic Plaza in downtown Hopewell. The parade will follow 15th Avenue, City Point Road, and Main Street to the plaza. Motorists should be prepared for traffic pattern changes, road closures, and delays. Motorists should also be watchful for increased pedestrian traffic in the vicinity of the parade route. The parade may be viewed from any public sidewalk or property. Parade officials ask that eventgoers be respectful of private property along the parade route.
The Grand Illumination of the Ashford Civic Plaza will take place immediately following the conclusion of the parade. The plaza is located in front of Hopewell City Hall, located at 300 N. Main Street. City officials will provide brief remarks, parade awards will be announced, and local elementary school students will perform Christmas carols before the illumination. Santa Claus himself will lead the crowd in the official countdown to the lighting of the city’s 36-foot tall Christmas tree. This year’s grand illumination will end with a real “bang!” Don’t forget to dress warm, “snow” may be in the forecast.
The downtown festival will take place following the grand illumination and will feature a variety of activities. The Hopewell Library will transform into a winter wonderland where children can participate in craft activities, enjoy a cup of cocoa, and visit with Santa in his workshop. Along Cawson Street and Library Street, horse and carriage rides will be offered in addition to a petting zoo and other activities. A Don’t forget to stop by several downtown businesses for food/drink specials and other activities. Children should be accompanied by an adult when attending the festival. All activities are free of charge. Concessions will be available for purchase.
Hopewell Recreation and Parks would like to thank Hopewell City Public Schools, the Appomattox Regional Library System (Hopewell Library), Guncotten Coffee and Gallery, and the Hopewell Downtown Partnership for helping make this year’s event such a huge success.
