Police Investigate Attempted Drowning of a Child
[Hopewell, VA] – On Monday, January 11, 2021 at approximately 10:27 AM, officers responded to the 500 block of Riverside Ave. for a report of a female and child in the Appomattox River. Before police arrived, bystanders observed the female taking the child into the cold water.
The Hopewell Police Department along with the Hopewell Fire Department responded to the scene and located the female and child in waist high water. Police officers entered the water, removed the child from the water, and began rendering medical attention. The Hopewell Fire Department was able to resuscitate the child who was transported to VCU Medical Center for further medical attention. A very special “thank you” to the Hopewell Fire Department personnel in reviving prior to transport.
The female, who had walked further out into the river, was pulled to safety by the Hopewell Fire Department and their rescue boat. She was transported to John Randolph Medical Center with non- life threatening injuries. The Hopewell Police Department Criminal Investigations Unit (CIU) began a criminal investigation into the incident. This incident is currently under investigation.
