**UPDATE – Homicide Investigation underway in the 800 Block of South 15th Avenue **

[Hopewell, VA] – On July 7, 2021, at approximately 9:30 P.M., officers along with Emergency Medical Services responded to the Quick Express Store located at 805 South 15th Avenue in reference to an individual shot near the gas pumps requiring medical assistance. Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive adult male with life threatening gunshot injuries. Emergency medical personnel attempted to render aid on scene and determined the subject was deceased. Members of the Hopewell Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division (CID) responded to the scene and initiated an investigation of the matter.

The decedent was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) for autopsy to determine cause of death. The Hopewell Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division (CID) is currently investigating this matter as a Death Investigation. The identity of the decedent is not being released pending notification of the next-of-kin.

Surveillance videos from the store shows an unidentified person of interest who was seen leaving in possible gold Chevy Tahoe early 2000’s model. The individual is described as a black male, approximately 5’8”- 6’0” tall, weighing, dressed in red shorts, black t-shirt, white socks and a gold necklace.

Photographs of the unknown person of interest and the vehicle have been included. Further information/updates will be released as they become available.

The victim has been identified as Mr. Melike Herbert Benjamin, 49 years old, of Chesterfield County. The next of kin has been notified. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family,” said Chief of Police Kamran Afzal.

UPDATE – On Monday, July 12, 2021, Mr. Jerome Montrez Thompson, Age 25 of the City of Petersburg turned himself into officers from the Hopewell Police Department Field Services Division. He was arrested on the charge of 2nd degree murder.
