A New Legacy for the Wonder City!
Hopewell, VA—Coffee roasting has finally made its way to the Wonder City! Legacy Roasting Company, a nano-coffee roaster is now open in Downtown Hopewell. They will be hosting a Grand Opening celebration on Sunday, June 3rd from 2pm-6pm!
There will be free coffee tastings, coffee roasting demonstrations, nitro coffee and bagged coffee for sale at the Grand Opening Celebration. In addition to celebrating, you will taste two coffee blends and cast your vote for which blend will become Hopewell’s “Wonder City” blend! Tickets not needed for the event but for people who RSVP through Eventbrite will receive a free 2 oz. bag of coffee (while supplies last).
Legacy is currently open for limited retail hours on Fridays from 2pm-6pm, with coffee being available for purchase anytime on their website, www.legacyroasting.com. Their roastery is located at 325 Library Street Hopewell, VA 23860.
Legacy Roasting Company started as a small venture, working out of owner, Larry Hancock’s parent’s garage. Their initial coffee roasting equipment included a grill purchased from Craigslist, and was powered by a Chevy windshield wiper motor. After attending countless events in the Richmond area, and becoming a regionally-known roaster, Legacy was able to purchase better equipment and eventually move into their own storefront.
Legacy Roasting Company has vended at multiple events in Downtown Hopewell, including the farmer’s markets, the Harvest Festival, Light Up the Night and the Third Thursday Marketplace events. Many Hopewell citizens are familiar with Legacy Roasting and are excited to see them call Hopewell home. Hancock, “is excited to be a part of this small-town vibe,” so much so he is going to create a “Wonder City” coffee blend. This blend will be available for purchase in the roastery.
Hopewell natives will be familiar with the building that houses the roastery, as it has been in the downtown district since the 1920s and previously housed Victoria’s Attic. Hancock has opted to keep the tin ceiling in the building, as well as expose the brick walls. He hopes to find a muralist to paint a mural that tells the legacy of the Wonder City in the main tasting room.
The Hopewell Downtown Partnership (HDP) worked to sell the property housing Legacy Roasting Company to a new owner who has invested over $100,000 fully rehabbing the space. The HDP also recruited Legacy to one of the four storefronts in the building. “We are excited to have Legacy open Downtown,” says Stacey Henderson, Marketing and Events Director at the Hopewell Downtown Partnership. “We are trying to create a ‘maker downtown,’ where people can come into a business and see the product they are about to purchase being produced. We’re excited to add Legacy Coffee Roasting to our experiential retail segment in our Downtown district.”Please visit Legacy Roasting Company’s Facebook page for more information about the Grand Opening event: https://www.facebook.com/events/2033933273536768/.
